Fire early this morning at Robichaud Office claimed the life of 71-year-old Antoine Comeau and forced a family to flee their home in their night clothes. There has been no decision on an inquest.
The fire was first noticed at 1:30 a.m. by nine-year-old Donald Cormier. He was on his way to the bathroom when he heard a noise and called his parents. His mother opened a door leading to the attic and saw the area filled with smoke. She shouted an alarm. Mr and Mrs Emile Cormier and the boy fled the house with Mr Cormier’s half brother Silfried Robichaud.
Mr Comeau reportedly lived at Comeau Point but had been staying at the Cormier home for about three weeks. Firemen found the man beneath his bed. They attempted to revive him while an ambulance was on its way, but he was dead on arrival at Hotel Dieu in Moncton.
The Shediac Fire Department fought the blaze. Fire damage was confined to upstairs rooms while the hitchen sufferd water damage. There has been no estimate of damage and the cause of the blaze has not been determined. It broke out again this morning about seven o’clock and the Cape Bald fire department was calle to extinguish it.
Funeral service for 72-year-old Antoine Comeau, who died in an early morning fire at Robichaud Office Wednesday (18 novembre) , will be held Friday at 3.30 p.m. in Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Memramcook East.
Born at Comeau Point, Westmorland County, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Philip Comeau and was a veteran of World War One.
Surviving are five brothers, Nap of Moncton, Tilmon of Turtle Creek, Edmond of Saint John, Adolphe of Cape Bald and Alex of Amherst.
The body is resting in Dupuis Funeral Home, Memramcook.
